World AIDS Day: Monday, December 1, 2014

By Ceasar Montoya:

Monday, December 1st is the 26th World AIDS Day. World AIDS Day is a time to remember those we have lost to AIDS, those who are living with HIV, and those fighting to prevent HIV from taking another life.

To commemorate the day and to show your support for the work we do, we ask that you wear a red ribbon on Monday. You can also participate in one of the many candle vigils, awareness events or ceremonies held to recognize this important day.

The first World AIDS Day activity that I participated in was on a cold December 1 a few years ago while working with a community based organization. We were handing out Safer Injection kits, Safer Sex kits, and providing information on HIV and STI testing to passersby. We stood with our handouts near Downtown Denver’s Colfax and Broadway bus stops across from Civic Center Park.

It was an honor to show my support in that way. If you haven’t had the opportunity, I strongly encourage you to find a way to show your support on Monday . You don’t have to freeze your buns off to get involved. Wearing a red ribbon in observance of the day is a start, but I encourage you to take a more active part. You’ll be glad you did.

We live in a time when HIV is manageable and good health is obtainable for those who are positive. If you have questions about accessing care services for the first time or wish to reconnect with a health care provider, contact either Ceasar Montoya or Maria Chaidez of the CDPHE’s Linkage to Care team:

Thank you for your support.
