The Capacity Building Unit – Training for STI/HIV Prevention

By Regina Charter

The Capacity Building Unit and Mid-America STD/HIV Prevention Training Center is a part of the STI/HIV Prevention Program at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. Our mission is “to promote excellence in the provision of STI/HIV prevention services by strengthening the capacity of individuals, agencies and communities”.  We do this by providing training to staff from contracted agencies and non-contracted agencies from state and local health departments, hospitals, clinics, and community based organizations.

Our staff is comprised of me, Regina Charter, the unit supervisor; Jennett Ray Bezdek, who coordinates courses and webinars; Emily Carson, who not only trains, but designs and revises curriculum, and Mariska Osborne-Wells, who is our newest trainer/consultant.

As the Capacity Building Unit, we are responsible for facilitating what we refer to as our “state” courses for our local partners. And as the Mid-America STD/HIV Prevention Training Center, we are responsible for facilitating “national” courses, meeting the partner-services and program-support training needs of state, local and community based organizations for 21 states in the middle region of the United States.

The Capacity Building Unit facilitated three courses this month:
  • “HIV Risk Reduction Counseling”. Held at the Gill Foundation on Oct. 2 and 3.
  • “Social Networks: A Recruitment Strategy for Counseling, Testing and Referral”, conducted on Oct. 9 and 10.
  • “HIV Rapid Testing: How to Conduct and Integrate it with HIV Risk Reduction Counseling”.  Held Oct. 16 and 17.
Next month, on November 7th, we will be facilitating “HIV Law and Ethics”.  This class will be held at the state laboratory building from 9-5.  There is still space available so please register through if you’re interested in attending the class.

Not only have we been busy with state and national courses, but we have been building a list of classes to keep up with on-going changes in prevention strategies (High Impact Prevention) and national shifts in the provision of medical care (Affordable Care Act).  Much more information will be coming about courses available and recommended courses in the future.

We are also in the process of completing our national course calendar for the first quarter of 2014 and our state course calendar for the first half of 2014 and will have both calendars posted on this blog by January 7th, 2014.
